The Undercroft is a similar size to the Great Hall, although the ceiling is much lower, largely because the floor has been raised by one and a half metres to prevent flooding. This room was used as a hospital, or almshouse, for more than 500 years, providing a central focus to the charitable work of the Merchant Adventurers.
